[Sep. 21st, 2009|11:05 am] |
- we could eat less, and be healthier - we could eat more nutritious food, and avoid chronic disease - we could eat less meat, and help reduce carbon emissions and pollution - we could eat less meat, and help stop the suffering of factory farm animals - we could eat organic, and help save the environment - we could eat organic, and less toxins will enter our bodies - we could eat less, and give more to the needy - we could eat local, and help support our community farmers - we could eat local, and help reduce CO2 emissions - we could eat out less, and stop supporting an industry that is endlessly wasteful
i wonder how much of the world we can change with one single bite? |

| Writer's Block: My Dream Job |
[Sep. 14th, 2009|10:36 pm] |
My dream job is to run my own pet shop. A community based business that only sells quality pet supplies, indie-made/hard to find pet accessories, educates the public about animal care, showcases rescued animals to spread awareness about adoption, and replaces preconceived notions of the pet shop.
Going to a pet store is very exciting for cat and dog owners, but not as much for other types of pet owners. I want my store to equally focus on other popular house pets, such as rabbits and parrots, bringing modern day living with these pets to the general public, ie: "the house rabbit."
If possible, general care classes for pets would be a free service to the community as well. The staff would be well-trained and polite. We would contract with local rescues to house some of their available adopters in our store. It will help them find new homes, and the rescue would be in charge of the entire adoption process; all we would provide is the housing, care, and public space :)
I do hope to one day make this a reality. The idea was shut down a few years ago when my ex-boyfriend told me how hard it was to run a small business. I keep making the mistake of giving up on things that may appear challenging, even if it's something I love. I'm hoping with my Saltwater Acorns etsy shop to get a taste of the small business. I also want to dabble in making pet accessories, which could very well be a precursor to owning a real life shop. I know Dennis would be fully supportive of this endeavor. Hopefully one day, when I have some financial backing, I'll be able to take a swing at this business. |

| gremlin babbles |
[Sep. 12th, 2009|11:01 pm] |
figured out the costs to make the steampunk gremlin happen by february, and i think it's doable.
i want to get a replica WWII parachute pack to be worn, but unfortunately those go for $400+ and way out of my considered range. however, making a replica is viable, and it's common to find replica WWII packs made for action figures. i could get one of those for cheap, design and modify my own pack and make it myself! i just think it would be a very nice touch for a gremlin who wrecks airships to have a way to abandon hip after he does his damage. he's gonna be a punk-ass little creature, so he'll have probably personalized the pack with a custome paint job as well.
in actuality, this costume is more diesel punk then steam.... which i'm fine with. if i can tinker some things to get a steamier feel for it i will be happy too. i doubt people will care. one of the things i enjoy about steampunk is the room for creativity.
a few things need to be reworked, and i'll be revising the costume design. when thats done i'll post it hear.
i think the orgional wrist-cuff is going to be made into a wrist compass. they existed, but i think i'm going to design my own.... and somehow make it steamy. simple, but steamy... perhaps a wrist pocket compass? haha.
i also need to acquire gadgetry, this ruffian steals stuff for sure! a necklace of keys and gears is not far off from a rodent who takes what looks pretty.... in fact, where'd he get that shiny pendant around his neck? sneaky little bugger.
i still need a prop for him to carry. a wrench was the first idea, but he might be confused for a mechanic. he doesn't fix things he breaks them. maybe a giant mallet, haha! |

when i get my own place, i hope it has space for an art studio and a pet room. the living room/entertainment room will be super geeky, and the kitchen will give you a sugar rush :) something zen for the bedroom would be nice. bathrooms will have fun themes, because bathrooms are tiny and easy to decorate.
reconsidering the art school teaching route, as something with more meaning and more secure. i need to talk to a counselor.
new favorite blog to follow: Demonysh Designs
click the image for a full view. i just love the personality in this artist's work. i'm feeling inspired to practice drawing better and exploring styles. i think it was the creator of ren & stimpy's blog where i read that if you want to get better, you have to draw and draw and draw others work... or something to that degree. imitate your favorite artists to help you create your own style.... i wish i could find the exact article he wrote about it. when i was little i used to freeze disney movies on the VCR, and draw what i saw. i drew a lot of the great mouse detective back then. need to get back into doing that and exploring different styles.
the other neat thing about this artist is she likes to draw parrots and other birds, and does it well. she really gets down their quirks, as she lives with parrots herself :) |

i had a good time on sunday. things got started later then they were originally planned to, but that's okay! den and i picked up angie, heading to colonial park, ping met us minutes later, followed by sarah and jan. had a pleasant time eating our picnic food, smashing watermelon, climbing trees, exploring in wooded trails, making conversation with crazy ice-cream men and eating questionable hot dogs by camp fire....

| peyton went to his new family!! |
[Sep. 6th, 2009|10:21 am] |
i met up with peyton's new family yesterday. i was expecting just to meet the son but they brought everyone, which was really comforting. they all seem really great and excited about peyton. it was also really refreshing to hear them talk about finding a rabbit-savvy vet and such. i really hope everything works out. i got a text from the son last night telling me that peyton is adjusting well. i'm so happy for him. although it feels a little empty in my room without me having to worry about what supplies peyton has blown through with his bottomless pit of a tummy.
i went to denny's for a party at his house. they had mostly seafood for dinner; clams, muscles, crabs, shrimp. i had a modest helping of everything, but my curse came back and i felt horrible and puked the rest of the night. third summer in a row.... i can't do shellfish anymore D:
now i'm getting ready for a picnic with sarah, angie and the whole gang. looking forward to it! |

| 30-day To-Buy Waiting List |
[Sep. 1st, 2009|03:42 pm] |
I have a bad habit of impulsively buying things. I'm in the process of creating a real savings plan for myself, as well as budgeting, but I also have stuff I just wanna buy. So, I am taking a tip, and creating a 30-day waiting list on stuff I want to buy. Also, in those 30-days, I will see if I can find the item through different means, either by buying it used or taking it off someone's hands before it gets thrown out. That way, I'm helping the environment by sticking to the 3 R's; REDUCE, REUSE, and then RECYCLE.
I'm keeping this list at the top of my journal so I don't forget about it, and every month I will go through the waiting list and knock off items that the impulsive desire has burned out on. This way I'm not wasting my money on bad decisions, and thus wasting resources that could have been focused elsewhere. This list will be kept private however, because I don't need everyone to know where I spend all of my money, hehe! Note that I also have a savings system where a big chunk of my paycheck goes to, as well as money that is for bills. What's left is for me to save, spend, or donate as I see fit. I'll let you guys know how everything works out :) |

- first impressions last forever, groom and dress to impress - exercise, have the body i've always wanted and be healthy for life - eat better, eat less meat, eat more fruits/veggies, try new recipes and be healthy for life - do homework asap so as to not miss precious opportunities with friends - don't put off homework with bullshitting, don't waste time - schooling is an adventure, life doesn't stop once the semester begins, learning doesn't stop once the semester ends - animal house :) - draw and pursue ideas when they hit so that they don't get left on the back-burner - write down every new idea - stop making excuses for fears and anxieties, push through and conquer them - run my own business - keep things simple, uncluttered, minimal - budget and savings to enjoy the present and the future
a lot of the goals are in progress, i decided not to talk about it until they were since i have a bad habit of being excited for an idea but never actually following through on it :)
and the one quote that helps me stay focused, "GO BIG OR GO HOME. |

| our rabbit rescue closed, but 2 rabbits remain (NJ) |
[Aug. 21st, 2009|09:17 pm] |
i just want to thank all of you who were so helpful when we found out our rescue was closing on us while there were still 6 rabbits in foster care. the great news is that there are only 2 rabbits left who need homes! we are located in Middlesex/South Bound Brook, NJ.
Peyton - ADOPTED!! gender: male (unneutered) age: ~1-2 years old size: small, 4.5lbs about: Peyton is a very energetic rabbit who loves to be apart of whatever is going on in the room. He enjoys exploring and getting into stuff he shouldn't, like most rabbits. He's extremely food motivated with a very healthy appetite, not picky in the least! I wish I could tell you his favorite treat but he loves everything! He handles being picked up with little resistance and also tolerates being brushed. He has a soft white coat with chocolate ears and spots. Unfortunately he still needs to be fixed, but is good with his litter box regardless.
Roman gender: male (neutered) age: 9 months old size: 5-6lbs about: Roman is a beautiful little boy. He is a very curious and enjoys exploring boxes, and running around his enclosure. He is a bit skittish, but seems to be coming around a bit. He does have a bit of a tooth problem, but the vet says it shouldn't cause him any trouble and doesn't need to be trimmed yet. Roman has an interesting brown coat except for the white on his chest and his white socks. He is very good with his little box. When he's settled into his spot he will duck his head down and let you pet him.
if interested in either of these rabbits, please e-mail me at captainrisu@verizon.net. thanks again for all of your help and support! cross-posted. |
